Understanding breast forms

What a breast form is

A breast prosthesis — usually just called a breast form — is worn either in the pocket of a mastectomy bra or against the skin, to restore the shape and the balance of weight across your chest and shoulders.

Forms differ in shape, profile, weight and finish. Your measurements and your own preferences are what guide the fitting: two people with the same measurements often want quite different things from a form, depending on what they wear and how they spend their day.

People come to us at many different points. If you recognize yourself here, you are very welcome — and if you are not sure where you fit, please call, because we are always glad to talk it through.

  • After a mastectomy, single or double
  • After a lumpectomy, where the difference in shape is smaller
  • Before or after reconstruction, including while waiting between stages
  • After a breast reduction or other breast surgery
  • For asymmetry unrelated to surgery
  • Replacing a form that no longer fits, or that has worn out

Private, one-to-one fitting support

Fittings happen in a private room with the door closed, one-to-one with a fitter who works with these products every day. The appointment is unhurried.

Questions are part of it rather than an interruption. If something is unclear, or you would like a difference explained again, please say so — that is what the time is for.

A form should sit the same way when you move as it does when you are standing still, so we look at how it behaves as you turn, reach and sit, and not only in the mirror.

Types and options

Breast-form types and options

A short map of the category, so the words are familiar before you arrive. Which of these suits you is one of the things a fitting works out — call and we will tell you what we can show you on the day.

Full forms
A full breast form stands in for the shape of the whole breast. It is a common starting point after a mastectomy, and it comes in a range of profiles and projections rather than one standard shape.
Partial forms and shapers
Partial forms, shapers and equalizers — the symmetry solutions — fill a smaller difference in shape, often after a lumpectomy or reconstruction, or where one side simply sits differently from the other.
Lightweight options
Lighter-weight forms are made for people who find a standard-weight form heavy on one shoulder, and for warm weather, travel, or a more active day.
Attachable and non-attachable options
Some forms sit in the pocket of a bra. Others are made to attach directly. Which suits you depends on your skin, what you do in a day, and your own preference.

What to expect during your fitting

Four steps, so you know how the appointment runs before you arrive.

  1. Before your visit

    Please bring the bras you wear most often, so anything you try can be checked in the garments you already own. If a provider has given you documentation, please bring that too.

  2. Careful measurements

    We take measurements at several points, over a bra or a light top. Those measurements are what guide the forms we bring in for you to try.

  3. Trying your options

    We bring in forms to try and explain how they differ as we go. You are welcome to look, move around, ask questions, and take the time you need.

  4. After your fitting

    If a question comes up once you are home, please call the location you visited. We are glad to talk it through.

Insurance and documentation

Support with insurance and documentation

We can explain what is commonly requested for a breast form, so you know what to ask your provider for before you come.

If your healthcare provider has given you an order, a prescription, a referral or any other paperwork, please bring it with you.

What a plan covers, and what documentation it asks for, depends on the plan itself, so coverage is not something we are able to confirm in advance.

Questions about breast-form fittings

A few things people ask us before a first appointment.

  • Is it okay if this is my first fitting?

    Yes — it is how most people arrive. Your fitter explains each step before it happens, and you are free to ask anything, or to stop, at any point.

  • Can I bring someone with me?

    Yes. Plenty of people bring a partner, a friend, or an adult family member. You are equally welcome to come on your own.

  • Can I look at the options before deciding?

    Yes. Many people come once to see what the options are and come back when they have had time to think it over.
